The design and consulting industry has a significant impact on the formation of costs and emissions in the building and infrastructure construction and industrial sectors. According to estimates, the majority, up to 70-80 percent, of project construction and maintenance costs and emissions are during the planning phase, even though design costs represent only 5-10 percent of the total construction costs. The design and consulting industry plays a crucial role in all phases of the project life cycle and as part of the value chain when striving for sustainable, cost-effective, and lifecycle-optimal investments and solutions.

The Finnish Association of Consulting Firms SKOL provides its members with an annual turnover statistics report and a barometer. Additionally, SKOL offers four annual economic statistics reports based on the order backlog data of the Technology Industries of Finland, a future outlook report from the European Federation of Engineering Consultancy Associations EFCA, and SKOL barometers. SKOL also leverages economic and market data from its stakeholders such as Confederation of Finnish Industries EK, Confederation of Finnish Construction Industries RT, Finnish Property Owners Rakli, Finnish Civil Engineering Advisory Board MANK. SKOL is the industry association for companies in the design and consulting sector, and it is a branch association of Technology Industries of Finland. SKOL consists of 120 member companies, employing approximately 20,000 individuals, with a total member company turnover of 2.2 billion euros.
